Quit caffeine: My personal top 3 tips

Quick summary

  • Breaking up with coffee doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

  • Identify the kind of person you want to be and make it part of your identity, not a daily debate.

  • Pay attention to how coffee actually makes you feel, rather than focusing only on quitting.

  • Keep the ritual you love and change what’s in the cup.

  • Experiment with what works for your body and circumstances instead of following rigid rules.

  • Ask: What function does coffee serve for me, and how else can I meet that need?

My divorce to coffee has been a long, tough journey.

Actually, let’s not call it divorce.

Let’s call it conscious uncoupling. 😅

I used to be the BIGGEST caffeine lover, although daily caffeine made me terribly anxious.

Here are my top 3 tips that changed the game for me (and for many of my clients):

My top 3 tips to quit caffeine

1. Decide who you are

  1. I became the ‘kind of person’ who doesn’t have daily caffeine.

It stopped being a decision I had to make every morning and became a standard/identity I chose to live by.

2. Create aversion to the pattern

I started paying attention to how coffee actually made me feel.

Not instantly quitting the coffee game, but simply paying more attention to the result of it.

Creating a different emotional association with the behaviour.

3. Keep the ritual, change the item (decaf)

This one was HUGE.

I didn’t have to give up my cappuccinos or morning ritual I loved.

I just changed what went into the cup.

Interestingly enough, I drank caffeine again during my holiday after about a year without it.

And I noticed something I hadn’t really experienced before:

When I’m not working,

I’m moving my body,

I’m outside,

and I’m relaxed:

Coffee feels COMPLETELY FINE in my system (might I even say: great?).

And I love that this has shown me again that it doesn’t have to be black or white.

The more I experiment, the more I can fine-tune what actually works and feels good for me, so it can be a conscious decision in every moment.

Weekly practice 👇

If your coffee ritual is unhelpful for you at times, start with one of these steps.

When there is resistance, check in:

  • What is the function coffee has for you?

  • What else can you do to fulfill that same need in a way that works more sustainably?

Your experimentation might just be life-changing, as it has been for me! 🔥
