The muscle of the soul

I have been having issues around my right hip.

Already for a few months it's been something bothering me. At first I thought it was the fact that I had done something wrong with the weights in the gym.

There were one or two days during the past months where I suddenly even had a hard time to walk, but then suddenly it would feel a lot better and I wouldn't feel it as much.

I decided to just rest and wait for it to heal by itself.

After a few weeks of resting—without feeling much improvement—I finally decided to go to physiotherapy.

I lay down on the bed in her small clinic space. We did a few exercises, and then she looked at me and said, “It’s not your hip, it’s your psoas.”

She massaged the “muscle of the soul,” as it’s often called, for about 15 minutes. It was incredibly painful.

Releasing and nourishing

In the following days, I felt open, emotional and vulnerable—which makes perfect sense when we release tension from the body.

I gave myself a soft, nourishing weekend: heating pads, cups of tea, lots of rest. Softening. Allowing.

By Monday, the pain was almost gone.

Something that I've been walking around with for months, gone through the beauty of touch.

Even when I have been working with clients in such a similar way for so long, I can't deny that it still makes me feel in wonder for how our system operates.
