A wasp sting, an ER visit, and the body’s wisdom
A story of a wasp
In 2021 my mum was stung by a bee and with that we discovered she was very allergic.
After a rushed visit to the emergency room, she luckily was okay.
Four years later, I was visiting her in Spain this summer, where my parents live on a beautiful farm in the countryside, surrounded by majestic mountains, running their yoga retreat center .
This time, she got stung again—by a wasp.
She has been receiving immunity treatment regularly, but still, her arm quickly swelled up.
As I looked at her arm and her face—again sitting outside on the terrace, just like four years before—I could feel my body tensing up.
My breath grew shallow.
One of the most important things I had learned from the event in 2021 was the importance of staying as. calm. as. possible.
It could be me who would need to make the next decision on what to do:
Go to the hospital or not?
Take medication or the epi-pen?
Did she have all the pills she needed in her bag?
As my body prepared itself for fight, I breathed.
One thing at a time.
I made sure I knew where the medication was.
I checked which hospital to go to.
I even consulted ChatGPT (as we do in moments of crisis) about the recommended steps.
Then I pleaded my case to go to the hospital, just to be sure.
Shaking and shiffering
Eventually we sat again in the emergency room—my mum in much better shape than four years ago, but my heart still racing.
I kept bringing my focus back to my breath, allowing my body to fully rest in the chair.
I am here.
She received the necessary treatment, and the doctor said he was glad we had come. She was okay.
We came back into the waiting room and I went to the toilet. Next to the basin I softly shook out my body, swaying side to side.
I felt my body soften, shiffer, come back to me.
I followed along with the natural process of undoing the build-up tension my body was designed to move through.
All of this reminded me of the importance of working with our body in this way. Moments of danger or crisis will always come—we can’t prevent that.
What makes the difference is whether we let the stress get stuck in us, or whether we give it space to move through and out.
As Gabor Maté often says: “What the body suppresses in order to cope, it will later express—whether through illness, stress symptoms, or disconnection.”
By giving ourselves that space, we come back not just to safety, but to presence—and, eventually, to resilience.
